Abdominoplasty / Apronectomy (removal of excessive skin from other areas of the body) – Information for GPs

Referral criteria / commissioning position

Surgery is not routinely commissioned; Requests for funding are required prior to referral to the Individual Funding Request Panel (IFR) on the grounds of clinical exceptionality; the minimum requirements are:

  • starting BMI above 40 (or 35 with co-morbidities)

AND

  • current BMI of less than or equal to 28.0

AND

  • at least 24 months since any bariatric surgery

AND

  • weight stability of at least 12 months

AND

  • significant physical functional disturbance e.g. severe problems with mobility. This includes severe intertrigo, disability and evidence of significant interference with activities of daily life

Information to include in referral letter

  • Details of how the patient meets this requirement
  • Impact on quality of life
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
