Upper and lower eyelid surgery – Information for GPs

Referral criteria / commissioning position

Eyelid surgery is not routinely commissioned for the following conditions:

  • Entropion
  • Ectropion
  • Epiphora

Requests for funding via the Individual Funding Request Panel (IFR) will be considered for:

  • Entropion where:
  • symptoms are severe and risk causing trauma to the cornea
  • there is recurrent infection

While awaiting the outcome of the referral, a lubricating eye ointment may be prescribed to help protect the cornea

Ectropion where:

  • there the patient is experiencing recurrent infection or inflammation

Epiphora where:

  • there the patient is experiencing recurrent infection or inflammation

In addition referrals to secondary care for Epiphora may be made diagnostic purposes or tear duct syringing only.

Investigations prior to referral

None

Information to include in referral letter

  • Details of how the patient meets this requirement
  • Treatments and interventions tried including the results
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
