Blepharitis – Information for GPs

Referral criteria / commissioning position

Urgent admission if:
• orbital cellulitis is suspected (person is systemically unwell, tender sinuses, restriction of eye movement)

Referral to secondary care in the following instances if:
• there is evidence of corneal disease
• vision deteriorates
• there is moderate or severe pain
• the diagnosis is uncertain
• associated disease, for example Sjögren’s syndrome or eyelid deformities, requires specialist management

Red Flags include:
• persistent localised disease or resistance to treatment
• marked eyelid asymmetry

Investigations prior to referral

None

Information to include in referral letter

  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
