Voice Problems (Dysphonia) – Information for GPs

Referral Criteria / Commissioning position

For hoarse voice problems see the ‘Hoarse voice’ pathway

Referrals to secondary only if:

  • Emergency or TWR:
    • see ‘Hoarse voice’ pathway
  • Routine:
    • Conservative measures not working and would benefit from a look at the cords and/or speech therapy

Investigations prior to referral

CXR – exclude sinister non-ENT causes

Information to include in referral letter

  • History and duration of the dysphonia
  • Is the dysphonia present all the time?
  • Outline treatments already tried/investigations performed including effects
  • Any associated features
  • Routine bloods including TFTs
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Employment
