Snoring – Information for GPs

Referral Criteria / Commissioning position

Refer to secondary care if:

  • sleep apnoea is suspected (to respiratory medicine for further assessment (sleep studies) and potential treatment (CPAP))
  • conventional primary care management is unsuccessful

Refer to weight loss management as appropriate.

Red flag symptoms

  • Symptoms or signs suggesting possible obstructive sleep apnoea (Epworth scale)
  • Any possibly abnormal growths, swellings etc. in the head and neck area
  • Stridor or voice changes
  • Swallowing problems

Investigations prior to referral

Consider TFT if suspected thyroid problem.

Information to include in referral letter

  • Timeline, severity, impact on daily living
  • Known variation of intensity, triggers
  • Patient’s understanding and expectation regarding options in a specialist service setting
  • Details of treatments and measures tried including outcomes
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
