Sinusitis – Information for GPs

Referral Criteria/Commissioning position

Referral if:

  • Conventional management & treatment options have been tried and have not been successful

Red flag symptoms

  • Excessive pain perception with little or no response to normal analgesia
  • Bloody nasal discharge
  • History of head injury or other possible facial/cranial trauma, especially if within the last six months
  • Facial pain without any nasal discharge
  • Ocular symptoms, sickness, severe dizziness, memory or behaviour issues etc.
  • Persistent or severe unilateral symptoms

Investigations prior to referral


Information to include in referral letter

The GP referral letter should contain:

  • Duration +/- recurrence of episode(s) of perceived or clinical sinusitis
  • Response to over the counter medications/measures and prescribed medication
  • Specific experience or expectation from patients
  • Effect on quality of life
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • Occupational history
  • Advice given so far to patient
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
