Rhinitis – Information for GPs

Referral Criteria/Commissioning position

Consider referral if the condition:

  • is refractory to treatment e.g. 6 weeks with nasal steroids
  • leads to nasal perforation, ulceration or collapse, significant crusting or cellulitis

Red flag symptoms

  • Recurrent unexplained epistaxis, especially if unilateral
  • History of significant head or facial injury
  • Bloody or offensive nasal discharge

Investigations prior to referral

None particularly needed.  Allergy testing is usually of little value

Information to include in referral letter

The GP referral letter should contain:

  • Timeline
  • Known triggers or situations of relief (e.g. on holiday)
  • Occupational history
  • Allergy history
  • Treatments and interventions tried including the results
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Smoking status
  • Alcohol consumption
