Nasal Polyps – Information for GPs

Referral Criteria / Commissioning position

Refer to secondary care when:

  • conventional primary care management is unsuccessful

Red flag symptoms

  • Unilateral growth
  • Unclear aetiology and doubts regarding benign quality
  • Associated facial swelling
  • Bloody discharge
  • Nasal polyps in children (think cystic fibrosis)

Investigations prior to referral


Information to include in referral letter

The GP referral letter should contain:

  • Timeline, possible triggers and impact on daily function
  • Exclusion of suspicious features
  • Allergy and smoking history
  • Aspirin sensitivity
  • History of  asthma
  • Medical and non-medical treatments attempted so far
  • Relevant past medical/surgical history
  • Drug history (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Current regular medication
  • BMI
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Patient’s understanding and expectation of possible options available to the specialist
