ESCAPE-Pain programme

NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG is implementing a new free pilot service from 8 April 2019 to provide the ESCAPE-Pain programme to patients who fit the criteria:

  • Aged 45 and over
  • 3 months or more hip/knee pain (with or without diagnosis OA)
  • Independently mobile and able to carry out regular exercise
  • Able to attend classes for 6 weeks

The provider of this service is North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) which will deliver ESCAPE-Pain using a leisure centre model with level four exercise instructors. Classes are being run in the Scarborough and Malton areas.

The programme offers participants an evidence based way of learning coping strategies to enable them to live with their chronic hip or knee pain without returning to seek healthcare interventions which are often unhelpful.

The programme consists of twice weekly sessions for six weeks offering structured exercise, education and appropriate signposting to other services to enable sustainable self-management.

The service is accepting referrals from GPs with immediate effect. There's more information for GPs here.

The next course is due to begin on 9 September 2019.
