The human heart is roughly the size of a fist and sits in the middle of the chest, slightly to the left. It’s the muscle at the centre of the body’s circulation system, pumping blood around the body as the heart beats. This blood sends oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products.
Lifestyle-related factors like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as smoking, poor diet and a lack of exercise can increase a person’s risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke. To increase awareness of heart health and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, Public Health England’s (PHE) Heart Age campaign is encouraging adults to complete the Heart Age test.
